Summary

Addresses are of two types, the physical or hardware address and the logical or IP address. The physical address of a computer is assigned to the network interface unit of the computer and is used by the Network Interface layer of the TCP/IP reference model to transmit data over a network. However, the higher layer protocols need the software address for transmitting data. Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) is used to resolve the physical address of a computer by using the IP address. Reverse Address Resolution Protocol (RARP) is used by diskless workstations to acquire their IP address from the physical address of the computer.
