The Ping utility is used for checking connectivity between two hosts. The Ping command uses ICMP error messages to check for connectivity problems. It can be used only for checking the connectivity at the Internet layer of the TCP/IP reference model. In other words, this command can be used only for checking IP level connectivity. To check if the TCP/IP protocol suite is installed properly on the local computer, use the Ping command followed by the loopback address.
