Using Custom Outline Numbers

The custom WBS codes discussed in the previous section are always tied to the outline structure. Each segment of the WBS code mask is linked to a specific outline level. Sorting the task list according to the WBS code produces the same order as sorting according to ID numbers. If you want complete control over a coding system for tasks that is independent of the outline structure you have created, you can use any of 10 custom outline fields (Outline Code 1 through Outline Code 10) to create alternative labeling systems that you can use to sort and group tasks in different orders.
