Administering Mail Services

To ensure smooth operation of your mail services, you must constantly monitor the mail services. There may be situations when heavy load on the network or on the mail host results in slow network performance. You need to take appropriate measures to ensure that the mail service functions properly under such conditions. As an administrator for mail services, your tasks include

  • Examining systems that are down and where mail is backing up.

  • Checking the mail queues to see whether mail is flowing out in and out.

  • Administering the alias database.

  • Setting up forward files.

  • Fixing mailing list problems for owners.

  • Analyzing the postmaster mail to check for problems in the mailing service.
