Formerly known as Yellow Pages (YP), NIS was the first Unix-based naming service that made network management an easy task by storing network information in a centralized location. The NIS environment consists of three types of hosts: master, slave, and client. The master server contains the NIS maps that store user and system information. The client servers access the maps in the master server for relevant information. The slave servers act as the backup servers for the master server.
