Summary

Among the resources system administrators have to manage are terminals and modems. To manage these resources, Solaris provides two tools: SAF and SAC. SAF recognizes a three-level hierarchy of processes: SAC (service access controller), port monitors, and port services. At the top of the hierarchy is SAC, which is responsible for invoking the port monitors. Next in the hierarchy is the port monitor used to monitor the port services. The two types of port monitors are ttymon and listen. Whereas ttymon administers service requests received via the serial (or tty) ports, listen administers across-the-network services.
