Central to the system administrator's responsibilities is enabling users to access distributed and shared system and network resources, such as file systems, applications, terminals, modems, printers, and so on. This chapter looks at the administration of the two network resources: terminals and modems.

In network computing, a terminal is a device that acts as the source and destination of data and controls the communication channel. A modem is a DCE (Data Communication Equipment) that uses RS-232C interface to exchange data with other computers over the network.
