Securing the NFS System

Using the NFS environment is a convenient way to share file systems over the network. However, at the same time, file sharing in the NFS environment poses security risks. The NFS server authenticates a computer making a file request. However, it does not authenticate users using the Unix authentication. Users in a Unix environment all have unique IDs within a domain. However, they may not have unique IDs across domains. Therefore, any user can become the superuser of a computer and can make file requests. By using Data Encryption System (DES), NFS server makes this kind of impersonation harder.
