Overview of NFS

The Network File System (NFS) service enables computers with different operating systems and architectures to access, share, and mount file systems across a network. The objects that can be shared are directories. Note that in an NFS environment, a computer cannot share a file hierarchy that overlaps the one that is already shared. NFS can be implemented in different operating systems because it defines a portable file system model instead of an OS or platform-dependent file system specification. This allows computers, without respect to which OS they use, to access files as if they were stored locally.
