Links

Links are a special feature of all -Unix-based operating systems. A link is a reference entry in a directory to a file stored in another directory. There might be several links—references—to a file. Links eliminate redundancy because you do not need to store multiple copies of a file.

Links are of two types: hard and soft (also known as symbolic). A hard link is a pointer to a file and is indistinguishable from the original directory entry. Any changes to a file are independent of the name used to reference the file. Hard links may not span file systems and may not refer to directories. The ln command by default creates hard links.
