The Boot Process for a SPARC System

In SPARC systems, the OpenBoot PROM (OBP) controls the system before the kernel is loaded. The SPARC boot process consists of the OBP phase, boot program phase, kernel initialization phase, and the init phase. The following list outlines the SPARC boot process:

  1. When you power on the system, the system firmware executes the power on self test (POST). The system initializes and PROM displays the system identification information. It runs the self-diagnostics. The bootstrap procedure in PROM loads the primary boot program, bootblk.

  2. The primary boot program bootblk finds and executes the secondary boot program, ufsboot.

  3. The secondary boot program, ufsboot, loads the kernel and transfers the control to it.
