Summary

A package is a collection of files, grouped together logically, and is required to run an application. The logical grouping of packages facilitates easy administration. You can install and remove packages using the command line or the Admintool.

Patches are collections of files and directories that are used to fix any source code bugs in the system. You can download patches from the Web site http://sunsolve.sun.com. To install patches, use the patchadd command. To remove packages, use the patchrm command.
