Patches—Fixing Bugs

Sun Microsystems delivers certain files, known as patches, that are used to fix any defects (bugs) in the system source code. Patches contain the files that replace or update the existing files that prevent the proper execution of the software. A patch is a collection of files and directories that contains the actual program used to fix the bugs, along with some other files and directories related to the patch.

Sometimes patches might cause some problems. For example, when the patch intended for fixing the bugs for one version is applied on a different version of the OS, it results in some unpredictable incompatibility problems. In such cases, remove the patch and install the new patch for the correct version.
