Packages in Solaris

Packages are sets of independent products that are licensed as a single product. When a product is developed, vendors define packages in the license certificate and not in the software product. This allows vendors to change the components of a package until the time they ship the license.

Packages are collections of files that are required to run an application. The files are grouped together logically, as packages, to facilitate administration. An example of a package is SUNWman, which is the package for the online manual pages. Sun packages always begin with the prefix SUNW, as in SUNWniscr, SUNWnisu, and SUNWaudio. Third-party packages usually begin with a prefix that corresponds to the company's stock symbol or name.
