OpenBoot Firmware—An Overview

The OpenBoot system in SPARC architecture provides a significant enhancement in functionality when compared to the proprietary systems of the past. This architecture was first implemented by Sun Microsystems on SPARC systems. OpenBoot performs the following tasks:

  • Testing and initializing the hardware.

  • Providing access to a set of tools to program and to debug it.

  • Starting the operating system.
