Managing Backups

Managing your backups is a key component to the overall backup process. If they are not efficiently stored or not well taken care of, they may not be in good working order in the event that you might need to use them.

You may already have a tape backup storage and management system in place in your organization. It would be wise to utilize your backup management procedures if they exist. If not, when maintaining backups make sure you do the following:

  • Store in a secure place, preferably a different location than the server.
  • Keep older backups in case your recent backup is damaged, destroyed, lost, or was not successful without your knowledge.
  • Create a system for overwriting old backup tapes.
