Sharing Directories

Sharing directories is a fairly straightforward affair with Samba. The swat utility makes setting them up not much more difficult than selecting almost any name for the share and reviewing some of the parameters, such as the path. Most selections don't require any extraordinary measures, and if you want a particular option, it's just a matter of selecting it. However, one or two parameters can cause problems—these are noted later. In addition, one share name, Homes, has a special significance for Samba and is also explained. The Share section is broken down by functional areas that correspond to the sections that follow.

Base Options

After naming a share with swat, it is created with default values and written to smb.conf.
