Why Share?

As soon as you have more than one computer on a network, certain conveniences become apparent. It is nice to sit down at any system on the network and have access to the same mail, the same files, and the same programs. It is even better if instead of having to put every single file on all the computers, the files can be shared. This saves disk space as well.

The original implementation for the capability to share files and directories over the network was developed by Sun Microsystems.
