Dial-Up Connections with PPP

The most common method of connecting to the Internet, by far, is through a dial-up modem connection using the Point-to-Point Protocol. This is true for any operating system; PPP is the de facto standard for dial-up connections. Setting up PPP on Linux is slightly more involved than on some other operating systems, but when you understand the basics, it's really quite easy to configure. Also, an understanding of PPP setup at the level of configuration files gives you much more insight into how it works. After a connection is established, you are, for all intents and purposes, a node on the Internet. All other applications that are dependent upon an Internet connection, such as Web browsers, are then operational.
