Patching a Kernel
If a new kernel version comes out and you have reason to upgrade, you can save yourself a lot of time and trouble by patching it. In some cases, such as if you've applied another patch or built the FreeS/WAN as outlined in Chapter 20, "Building a VPN (FreeS/WAN)," you'll need to make some preparations first. These will be covered in the following text; for now, don't worry about them.
Download the kernel patch. If your current kernel is 2.4.10, the patch file is patch-2.4.11.bz2. You can only patch one level up. To patch up two levels, you need to apply two patches.
Put the patch in the /usr/src directory. If you have a symlink to linux-2.4.10 called linux (or if you just put your kernel source in a directory called linux), proceed ...
