Basic Desktop Elements

When GNOME first appears, it displays the desktop in the default configuration, shown in Figure 4.3. There are two basic screen components to be aware of—the Desktop and the Panel. A menu is also at the top of the screen, but this is technically a panel.

The Desktop is the main working area of the GNOME environment. This is the background behind all the other components that run on the screen.
