Working with Commands

The majority of Linux commands perform functions in exactly the same way as their UNIX equivalents. Many commands are quite cryptic, so the typical challenge with Linux commands is matching the appropriate command with the desired function. The list of commands included in this appendix is not meant to be an all-inclusive list; rather, it is intended to provide a quick reference to commonly used commands and a brief explanation of what each command does. The commands listed here are located in one of four binary directories: /bin, /sbin, /usr/bin, and /usr/sbin.
