Many larger shops have, over the last few years, created very complex domain structures. For some, it was simply because of a lack of centralized planning. Windows NT, because of its trust management structure, encouraged companies to create trusts between domains to facilitate cross-domain permissions. The effect of this was that various groups in the company created domains and then joined together over a period of time without a larger plan. I have seen NT domain structures that looked like a football play gone bad. For others, this occurred because of scalability. Windows NT did not recommend domains with more than 40,000 objects. But Active Directory scales to millions of objects.
