The KCC is mentioned often in the preceding sections, so we should spend at least a little time looking at what it does.

The KCC is a process that operates all DCs in the enterprise. You can manage the KCC indirectly through tools such as the Active Directory Sites and Services tool and the Active Directory Replication Monitor.

As mentioned earlier, the KCC performs a two-step process to determine replication topologies. The first phases consists of three steps:

1.
Evaluate the current topology.
2.
Check to see whether any failures using the existing connection objects have occurred.
3.
Create any new connection objects necessary to maintain the no-greater-than-three-hops replication topology.
