Summary

Operations masters roles can be an arcane subject. They are assigned by default, and when they're working, they're invisible. However, in any situation except a tiny domain, it pays to assign the roles manually to different computers. Many performance problems can be addressed by properly placing operations masters.

The two forest-wide roles are the schema master and domain naming master. The remaining three—the PDC emulator, RID master, and infrastructure master—are specific to the domain.
