WINS

WINS is the last non-DNS name resolution methodology you will look at in this chapter. WINS is a NetBIOS name server (NBNS) used to resolve NetBIOS names to IP addresses. The previous example of NetBIOS name resolution with lmhosts was static. WINS is a dynamic service that stays current with the network and is implemented in most large Windows installations.

A Windows 2000/NT/9x computer that is configured as a WINS client registers itself at boot time with the WINS server, refreshes its entries every three days by default, and unregisters its entry when the system is shut down.
