The lmhosts File

lmhosts is a static text file used to map IP addresses to NetBIOS computer names. Although its use is discouraged in large environments because managing text files becomes unwieldy, lmhosts is a very useful troubleshooting tool and can be used to find a DC for logging in from Windows 2000 if DNS is not available.

Caution

Although the lmhosts file can be used for troubleshooting, if you leave an lmhosts file on the client, it inevitably becomes stale. DNS and WINS are dynamic and respond to changes in the network; static text files, such as lmhosts, do not. If an entry becomes inaccurate because of changes to the network, the client loses much of its capability to communicate.
