The next section walks you through most of the possible scenarios for installing AD servers. Regardless of the scenario, you will encounter several core questions during the dcpromo.exe process, and it is best to have considered and answered those questions in advance.

Those core questions are as follows:

  • What are my DNS choices? Will I (can I?) use my current DNS implementation? Where will my DNS be hosted?

  • What are my DNS/Active Directory namespace plans?

  • What about filesystems? I must have at least one NTFS filesystem on the DC.
