The Word 2000 File Format

In Word 2000, Microsoft has retained the same binary (DOC) file format that was used in Word 97 for Windows and Word 98 for the Macintosh. Of course, files saved in Word 2000 support features that are not available in Word 97. These features are lost when you open and resave the file using Word 97.

Setting a Default File Format

If not everyone in your organization has upgraded to Word 2000 yet, you can specify that your users save Word files in an older format until you have completed the migration. You can also specify HTML (page 384) as your standard format, or a foreign-language Word format, or an older WordPerfect format such as WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS.
