Project: Using Captions and Cross-References Together

If you create documents with many figures, you can largely automate the tracking of those figures by using Word's Cross-reference, Captions, and AutoText features together. In this project, you'll walk step-by-step through setting this up.

Step #1: Set up AutoCaptioning.

First, choose Insert, Caption, and click AutoCaption. Next, check all the boxes that correspond to the types of images or objects you need to caption. Then, insert at least one caption, using either AutoCaptioning or the Caption dialog box.

Tip

The objects are listed based on the programs set up to run them in Windows. For example, JPGs for Web pages might be associated with Microsoft Photo Editor 3.0.
