Project: Automating the Indexing Process

Perhaps your organization spends quite a bit of time creating long documents that cover much the same subject matter. You don't have the time to build custom indexes for all these documents. But wouldn't it be nice if you could automatically create at least rough indexes of what's in them? You can. In this project, you'll build an Index AutoMark file and then record a macro that automates using it.

Step #1: Open a large document similar to those you intend to index.

Use a copy, not the original. Then, mark index entries throughout the document, with the Cross-Reference option selected as shown in Figure 18.8.
