Project: Making Quick Work of Complex Outlining

Have you ever been handed a large document that's incomplete, in need of some reorganization, and doesn't have heading styles? In this project, you use the Outlining tools you've just learned about—along with other Word tools such as AutoFormatting and Find/Replace—to get such a document into great shape, fast.

Step #1: Reconnoiter. Just how bad is it?

  • Are there any heading styles? (In the example, no.)

  • If there are no heading styles, have the headings at least been formatted consistently?

  • Does the current organization make sense for the most part, or does the document have to be reworked thoroughly?

  • Do you have to fill in many holes, or just a few?
