Understanding Office Server Extensions

Online collaboration is made possible by the installation of OSE (Office Server Extensions, also called Office Web Server Extensions) onto a Microsoft Web Server. Online collaboration is composed of the following subcomponents:

  • Web discussions

  • Web notification and subscription

  • Web folders

  • Synchronization of Web folders

  • NetMeeting (not a part of OSE)

The heart of online collaboration is Web discussions. The Web discussion tools enable each user to insert and edit comments for any given document under discussion.

The Web discussions interface is not a toolbar, though it looks like one. To activate it, choose Tools, Online Collaboration, Web Discussions. You find the interface at the bottom of the Word 2000 window. ...
