General Network Security Guidelines

As you've seen by now, network security in a Windows 95 workgroup LAN must be configured, cooperatively, by the network neighbors who are connected to the LAN. To avoid loss of your workgroup's valuable data, accidentally or otherwise, consider the following four guiding principles:

  • Although setting up a completely open, password-free network is easy, resist the temptation. Even though you may not have to enter passwords with password caching enabled, require them because they will increase your options later.

  • If you can make access to a shared resource read-only, do so. Use full read/write access only when it is necessary. This practice can prevent accidental deletion of important files and directories.
