Peer Networking and Routability
A large business network is actually more accurately described as an internetwork—a network of networks. Individual LANs, or network segments, each containing a limited number of machines, form natural divisions between departments, divisions, or geographical locations within a company. The default transport protocol used in most of the Microsoft networking products is called NetBEUI, and unlike NetWare's IPX and TCP/IP, NetBEUI is a nonroutable protocol. This means that communication between Windows network machines is limited to those within the local segment, as shown in Figure 35.4, unless you take explicit steps to provide routing between networks.
