With Windows, you have the ability to change how your application displays, even while you work. This can help if you run applications that operate with different screen resolutions, or if you use programs that look better in different font sizes. Some applications, such as graphics programs or multimedia, work better when they use 256 colors and higher resolution.

The resolution is the number of dots shown on-screen. The more dots on-screen, the more detail you can work with. However, with a high-resolution screen, icons or fonts that appear an adequate size on a VGA screen can now appear small.
