Chapter 25. Connecting to Client/Server Databases

One of the computer buzzwords of the mid-1990s, downsizing, was mentioned in the context of local area networks (LANs) in the preceding chapter. Downsizing has another element: moving database management systems from mainframe computers to client/server RDBMSs that run on PCs and reduced instruction set computing (RISC) workstation-servers.

Another newly minted term, rightsizing, means choosing the best combination of computer platforms to ensure maximum availability of corporate data to those who need it. Rightsizing often involves retaining mainframe computers as giant database servers but moving the applications that access and manipulate the data from the mainframe to PCs.
