There are many views as to what interior design is – in this book, the discipline is considered as a specialist three-dimensional design activity, related to, but distinct from, architecture. The interior designer transforms existing buildings to improve their performance or to allow them to be reinvented for a new use. A key aspect of this work is the treatment of the existing envelope and the strategy for the introduction of new elements into the existing space.
