Chapter 8. Diversity

Diversity is the best technique for overcoming multipath fading in a wireless channel without adding inordinate complexity to the receiver unit [Jak74]. Rather than rely on a single fading wireless channel, diversity receivers exploit multiple copies of the same signal received from different channels. Each channel in such a receiver is called a diversity branch. The more branches available to a diversity receiver, the more resistant to noise and bit errors the overall communications link. The reason: One branch may fail, but it is very unlikely that all branches will fail simultaneously.
