Air Quality

Potential pollutants:

1.  reduced oxygen and increased carbon dioxide from people;

2.  water vapour, cigarette smoke;

3.  formaldehyde from studio furnishings.

Ventilation Requirements

To maintain carbon dioxide at the maximum recommended level of 0.5 per cent by volume the minimum ventilation requirement is 0.8 l/s for seated persons.

Dilution of body odours to acceptable levels requires a fresh air ventilation rate of 8 l/s for sedentary non-smoking occupants. When heavy smokers are present the rate should be at least 32 l/s.

A person seated and at rest produces approximately 115 W of heat (75 per cent by radiation and convection, 25 per cent by evaporation).
