Two-channel stereo
This chapter covers the principles and practice of two-channel stereophonic recording and reproduction. Two-channel stereophonic reproduction (in international standard terms ‘2-0 stereo’, meaning two front channels and no surround channels) is often called simply ‘stereo’ as it is the most common way of conveying some spatial content in sound recording and reproduction. In fact ‘stereophony’ refers to any sound system that conveys three-dimensional sound images, so it is used more generically in this book and includes surround sound.
