Capturing action is easy, but the biggest problem for most people is getting close enough to the action in difficult lighting situations. You can invest in a telephoto lens, but even that will seldom get you as close as you’d like from the bleachers and the light is significantly choked off for anything but sports played in broad daylight.

That’s why you see all those big fat lenses down on the sidelines. They’re so close to the action that I’m sure people wonder why they need such large lenses. But they’re large in order to gather more light, not necessarily to magnify the scene. They’re shooting with 200mm and 300mm lenses on the sidelines of most games, because the extra light lets them shoot at higher shutter speeds. You’ll see ...
