11.24 COLOSSAL MAGNETORESISTANCE

There is yet another family of compounds, namely, ReAxMnO3, where R may be La, Y, Pr, Nd, Sm, and so on and A is Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb, and so on, whose MR is much higher than the multilayer GMR compounds. The MR in all cases is defined as

where ρ(H) is the resistance in the presence of the magnetic field H and ρ(0) the resistance in the absence of the field. In some of the above compounds, the resistance is reduced some million times but this requires high magnetic fields of the order of a few Tesla.
