Objectives

In this chapter, we will look at communicating with hardware devices (namely terminals and modems) using the serial interface. We'll also discuss the components that make up a serial interface, discuss the differences between Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) and Data Communication Equipment (DCE) devices, and see how to configure the Service Access Facility (SAF) to enable this communication.
