Objectives

In this chapter we will look at all aspects of the start-up (boot) and shut-down procedures for computers running the Solaris Operating System. As well as looking at stages of the boot operation through the start up of Solaris processes, we will also look at a number of the Solaris daemon processes, including how to start, stop, and manage them. The chapter will end with a description of the OpenBoot Programmable Read-Only Memory (PROM), which allows some control over the management of the system boot and can be used to help debug boot problems.
