CLIENT-SERVER TERMINOLOGY

The following are common client-server terms:

  • Server. A server is a piece of hardware or software that provides a particular service to its clients. Examples of common servers used by every network user are web servers, mail servers, Domain Name Servers, and so on.

  • Client. A client is a user application used to access a service provided by a server. A web browser such as Netscape is a client application that uses services provided by a web server. Similarly, you also use clients for email that use services provided by mail servers.
