CHAPTER SUMMARY

The chapter described the Network Time Protocol (NTP), which is used to synchronize the time of Solaris hosts with a reference time source. NTP can be used in client/server mode or as a broadcast service. The xntpd is the main NTP daemon used by the server and client systems. It uses a configuration file, /etc/inet/ntp.conf, that determines whether a system acts as a client or as a server. There are multiple ways to configure both the client and server systems. NTP can use different time sources, including global positioning system satellites, reference time broadcast signals, and standard time servers on the Internet.
