DHCP IP ADDRESS ALLOCATION TYPES

Basically, the following three types of IP address allocations are used by DHCP when assigning IP addresses to DHCP clients:

  • Automatic. The automatic lease is used to assign permanent IP addresses to hosts. No lease expiration time applies to automatic IP addresses.

  • Dynamic. The dynamic lease is the most commonly used type. Leased IP addresses expire after lease time is over, and the lease must be renewed if the DHCP client wants to continue to use the IP address.

  • Manual. A manual allocation is used by system administrators to allocate fixed IP addresses to certain hosts.

NOTE

The most commonly used lease type is the dynamic lease because this type of lease requires the least configuration.
