CHAPTER SUMMARY

This chapter introduced the TCP/IP protocol. The discussion started with a brief history of the protocol and a list of agencies responsible for operations on the Internet. You then learned about the different TCP/IP layers, and a comparison of these with OSI layers was presented. Then you learned about the structure of IP addresses and how an IP address is divided into host and network parts. Different IP address classes were also discussed here. You learned address ranges for all of these classes and their use. After that, there was an important discussion about network masks and subnetting. This concept was explained with two examples.
