INTRODUCTION

So far, you have an understanding of basic concepts about computer networks. You studied the OSI reference network model in the first chapter of this book. You also know what network layers are and how they interact with each other. The OSI network model is not an actual protocol itself; instead, it is a recommended way to build network protocols. This chapter starts by introducing the most widely used network protocol stack, TCP/IP. The Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol has become the industry standard over the past decade. The TCP/IP and OSI protocol models are similar in many ways, but also differ in other ways. These similarities and differences are discussed in detail in this chapter.
